hacker group said it stole personal information from an fbi laptop. melanie alnwick has more on this. >> reporter: the group calls itself antisect for saint security and -- for antisecurity and it claims it was able to hack into an fbi agent's laptop to find the file. it wants the public to know, in its words, the fbi is using this apple i.d. information for a tracking people project. anti-sect linked up with the group anonymous to publicize the data breach. many sites posted the data. 1million information datas linked to iphones and ipads and the device name. the fbi disputed the claims saying the bureau never asked for or possessed a file of apple i.d. information. still, many organizations have been able to verify the apple i.d.'s posted are valid. every apple device has a unique identification number. it let's itunes and ideveloppers know which is running which app. for example, it can allow a game developer to keep track of the high score. they found 12 million apple i.d.'s and there is a data file with user names, zip codes, cell phone numbers and addresses but shows just the 1

are obviously investigating this very closely. the fbi has a lead in this investigation. the information the best information and the best assessment we have today is that in fact this was not a preplanned premeditated attack. that what happened initially was that it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in cairo as a consequence of the video. people gathered outside the embassy and then it grew very violent and those with extremist ties joined the fray and came with heav heavy weapos which unfortunately are quite common in post revolutionary libya and that then spun out of control. we don't see at this point signs this was a coordinated plan premeditated attack. we will wait for the results of the investigation and don't want to jump to conclusions before then. i think it is important for the american people to know our best current assessment. >> chris: and the last question, terror cells in benghazi have carried out five attacks since april including one at the same consultate, a bombing at the same consultate in june, should u.s. security have been tighte

so the fbi was, obviously, very interested in him. ferris was questioned beginning in march of 2003, and during the interviews with ferris, he mentioned this conversation that they had had with and this idea of shooting up the shopping mall. and also the name of christopher paul, the third man at this coffee shop came up. authorities started to piece all this together, and eventually in a sort of slow domino effect the three were arrested and charged. so ferris, the pakistani immigrant, was -- ultimately pleaded guilty to two charges of terrorism-related crimes. he pleaded guilty in a secret, closed deal in may in virginia. may of 2003. the idea was that he had a lot to offer the government, and he might be able to get a reduction in his sentence based on the information he could provide. unfortunately, his case leaked, and the government was forced to publicize his conviction in that june. and at that point everything went to heck. ferris was very upset. he'd lost his bar going chips. meanwhile, the government -- the bargaining chips. meanwhile, the fbi was very interested in one o

. >> reporter: we have a he said/she said between the hacker group and the fbi of all federal agencies. let's take a look at what we know so far. the hacker group is called antisec claiming to have posted 1 million apple identifying data pieces of information. they also say that they've got 12 million of these i.d.s in total and only posting a few as a sample. they say they got the information from the laptop of a fbi special agent by hacking in to that laptop and includes unique device identifiers, user names and in some cases links it to personal information such as e-mail addresses. now, here's what the fbi says about this. they say at this time there is no evidence indicating that a fbi laptop was compromised or that the fbi either sought or obtained this data. now, i talked to the fbi about that this morning and saying there's no evidence of this agent had this information on his laptop. wasn't a personal situation with it on an off the the record basis. they say he simply didn't have the information that the hacker group said he had. now, here's where this story starts to get really wei
